Covid-19 and demography in Russia

Yesterday Rosstat provided the October data on population trends in Russia. It is worth highlighting the number of deaths due to Covid-19, which is clearly higher than the data provided by the Ministry of Health, but above all the significant negative balance between births and deaths (about -120 thousand). Now all eyes are on the beginning of the year when the overall demographic decline for 2021 will be known.

Rosstat presented data on the natural movement of population in October 2021

In October 2021 there were 82,679 marriages, 54,287 divorces, 120,81 babies were born and 247,197 people died.

Rosstat distinguishes four groups of deaths of persons diagnosed with COVID-19:

COVID-19 as the leading cause of death. In October 2021, 58,822 such cases were recorded;

COVID-19 is presumed to be the main cause of death, but further medical research is needed. There were 9,912 such cases in October;

COVID-19 was a co-morbidity, influenced the development of other diseases and contributed to complications that hastened the patient’s death. In October 2021 there were 1,141 such cases;

COVID-19 was a concomitant disease, but did not have any impact on death. In October there were 5 thousand 18 such cases.
